10 Years Strong!

On Saturday October 10, 2015 we had our last game of the 2015 season! The double header featured the throwback teams Dead Mans Curves VS Big House Brawlers in the first game and the Marionettes VS Tucson Derby Brats in the second game. This was a special event for Duke City Roller Derby, because this was our 10th anniversary game! The Dead Mans Curves and Big House Brawlers were our original home teams from 10 years ago! Pictured below you see the current Dooms Dames sporting blue with black and white checkerboard accents representing the Dead Mans Curves, and the current Disco Brawlers wearing orange with black and white striped accents, representing the Big House Brawlers!

The day was clear with nice warm weather; oh what a beautiful day for a brawl! The day brought fun, excitement, and some special surprises. Dead Mans Curves started off with a little trouble getting their jammer out of the pack in the first jam where we saw a star pass from Whoreticia Maddams to Pivot Kell’s Inferno who snuck in to steal 4 points! The Curves really turned it on in Jam 3 where jammer Fighting Girlfriend racked up 30 points while her blockers held Brawlers’ jammer Brawny Rotten in the pack for the entire jam. After jam 9 the Curves lead 40-9. Jam 8 saw the Brawlers’ first really successful jam where Harley Darlin’ was able to get a few jammer lap points in and gain 14 points, bringing the score to 44-23. Midway through the first half Curves’ skater Lil Miss Tuffhit was ejected from the game for a backblock that the referees deemed reckless. Curves’ Jammers Whoreticia Maddams, Fighting Girlfriend and Swearin’ Marie continued to gain lead jammer status and pack on the points, with a halftime score of 89 to the Brawlers’ 55.

The second half started off slow with some low scoring jams from both sides as lead jammers called jams off quickly and strategically.  Curves’ started pulling in points with Whoreticia Maddams and Swearin’ Marie leading the pack. On the other side, the Brawlers shut down the Curves’ jammers for 5 jams while their own jammers Jerk of All Skates, Seam Slayer and Athena Sting were slowly chipping away at the Curves’ lead.  In Jams 12 and 13, some stellar blocking by Curves’ Doom Dee Doom and Kell’s Inferno caused Brawlers’ Jammer Pissy Long Stalker get two penalties in row, allowing Curves’ jammer Swearin’ Marie to score 23 points!  Brawlers’ Stalker had trouble getting out of the pack in Jam 18 and the Curves’ blockers forced her to pass the star to Pivot Athena Sting, but not before Curves’ jammer Swearin’ Marie piled on 24 more points bringing the score to 179-84.  In the last jam a fight broke out, players from both teams throwing each other down and punching on one other!  Even the players on the bench came out on the track to jump into the brawl and player Doom Dee Doom even took down referee Fowl Play…was it real? At first I thought so, but turns out it was all planned by the teams and refs in honor of the throwback 10th anniversary game; Fighting used to be real! Penalties were fairly even, Curves with 23 penalties to the Brawlers’ 24, but the Dead Mans Curves took the win over the Big House Brawlers 184-84.   After the brawl was over, the game ended with a lil’ flag play; pictured below is Kell’s Inferno trying to recover the Dead Mans Curves checkered flag from Leigh Featherstone! This was the last game for Jerk of All Skates; we are very sad to say she is retiring from derby and wish her the best of luck! Highest scoring jammers were Brawlers’ Jerk of All Skates with 26 points and Curves’ Swearin’ Marie lead the entire pack with 96 points!

The second bout of the day saw our very own junior team the Marionettes, take on the Tucson Derby Brats. The Tucson Brats shutout the home team in the first few jams but by jam 8, the Marionettes had collected themselves and tied up the game 19-19.   That tie didn’t last long however, as the Tucson blockers shut down the Marionettes’ jammers once again and their jammer Madeline Bootyfly racked up 40 points in jam 10 to bring the score to 73-19 in favor of Tucson.  We did see an awesome apex jump by our own Brusin’ B. Anthony in jam 12, but Tucson had another big jam by Iris the Virus of 29 points to close out the half with a score of 141-70.

The second half saw some very intense play and great teamwork from the Marionettes as they tried desperately to close the gap and get back in the game.  They must have had a great peptalk from the coaches during halftime because they had regrouped and came out very strong, starting off the second half with a 29 point jam by Alley Cat!  This brought the score to 141-99, a great start to closing that gap. We saw a few more solid jams from Marionettes jammers Miss Demeanor, Robovirus, and Battle Royale and by jam 6 the Marionettes had cut into most of that lead and were down by only 14 points, with a score of 166-152!  The Marionettes were giving the Brats a run for their money, but at that point we saw the momentum shift back to Tucson!  Their blockers only allowed the Marionettes’ jammers to score 10 points in 8 jams and by jam 14 had extended their lead 225-162. They continued to battle it out in the final jams where we saw two more 15 point jams from Tucson’s Violent Violet and Madeline Bootyfly. The Marionettes had a strong finish with a 14 point jam from Battle Royale, but it was not enough to overtake the solid lead Tucson had gained in the last part of the second half.  The game finished with a final score of Tucson Derby Brats 225 to the Marionettes 176. Penalties were dead even between the two teams with 14 penalties on each side. Highest point scorers were Battle Royale from the Marionettes with 46 points and Madeline Bootyfly from Tucson with 65 points! It was a well-played game ladies, congrats on a great end to your season!

Here’s a quote from one of the Marionettes coaches, Whoreticia Maddams: “They have improved immensely over this season, especially within the last couple months. They have come together as a team both on and off the track and are growing into amazing young athletic women. I'm excited for next season and to watch them continue to grow.”

Surprise a Derby Wedding!

These ladies joined hand in hand, taking forever vows, and looking the part! What is a derby wife you may ask?  Simply put, a derby wife is the one person in this whole sport of roller derby that the very instant you looked at her, you felt like you’d known her your whole life!  See more info on the origins of the derby wife here: http://rollercon.com/events/derby-wedding/

What a way to end the season! Great job ladies!!

Happy 10 years of being Strong Athletic Women!
