Duke City’s second home event of the year is this Saturday, May 28 at the Heights Community Center. This is an outdoor event, so be sure to bring your sunscreen! The vendor village will feature a number of local businesses including Gatos y Galletas and Sister Bar. Food truck TFK Smokehouse will be on site, and junior derby skaters from The Marionettes will host a bake sale.
Doors open at 3:30 PM, and the first whistle is at 4 PM. Entertainment during halftime of the second game will be the Anslover Family Band.
Juggernaughties Face Off Against Greenlee County Rollers
The Juggernaughties are Duke City’s B travel team. Sporting brand new Iron Doll uniforms, the Juggernaughties skate in the first game of the doubleheader against a mashup team of skaters from southern New Mexico.
After a year away, #78 Smith returns to the Juggernaughties. Athena Sting will take to the track for the first time this year after a lower-leg injury, as will BeeBop, who returns from a medical hiatus. Glad to have you two back!
New to the roster this season include three transfers: Hermione Strangler, previously of Sister City Roller Derby, who won Most Valuable Blocker for the Juggernaughties in Salida, Colorado earlier this spring; Mazel Tov Cocktail, originally of Providence Roller Derby; and SmacKillavrey from the Waimea Wranglers, the Most Valuable Jammer for the aforementioned game in Salida.
Expect Duke veterans B. Tona Brat and Magali to provide strong blocking leadership, along with Harley Darlin’, Hearno Evil, and Smith. The bench has a number of jammers available to them including Ivy A. Nightmare, Whoreticia Maddams, French BulldozHer, Mazel Tov Cocktail, and SmacKillavrey. BeeBop, Athena Sting, and Pissy Long Stalker all skate multiple positions. It’ll be exciting to see where these athletes line up on game day.
Greenlee is an unknown opponent, so we may see the Juggernaughties adjusting their lineups depending upon the cohesion demonstrated by the visiting team. Come cheer our skaters on!
Return of the Hobots
The Hobots return to the track this weekend after a two-year hiatus. They take on the Disco Brawlers, who lost in overtime to the Dooms Dames in Duke City’s nail-biter season opener in March. A few of the Dooms Dames will be playing as borrowed skaters for the Disco Brawlers and Hobots, but the ladies in army green and red have the weekend off.
Led by Captain Fighting Girlfriend, the Hobots boast a deep jamming bench including Girlfriend, Kell’s Inferno, SmacKillavrey, Swearin’ Marie, and Whoreticia Maddams. Keep a look out for borrowed Dooms Dames jammer Ivy A. Nightmare. Muñecas coach Kap’n Krush returns to the track as a Hobot after a short hiatus from skating, and rookie skater Sandstorm will make her game-day debut in blue and silver. Rounding out the roster are Athena Sting, Ima Hazard, and Pissy Long Stalker, as well as borrowed blockers Nikki Nail’er, Dora the Destroyer and Smith. Missing from the Hobots roster this weekend is blocker Doom Dee Doom, who will be in disguise this weekend as a referee.
The Disco Brawlers look to avenge their March loss with a short but talented roster. Led by all-star skaters Killer Queen, Harley Darlin’, Captain Hearno Evil, and French BulldozHer, the skaters in wine and gold intend to make a statement in the 6 PM game. Back on the track after recovering from a knee injury, TamTrum joins rookie enemy of the skate to round out the roster. Borrowed Dooms Dames skaters include BeeBop, Dirty lil Lucy, Mazel Tov Cocktail, Magali, Skela-Laur, and Meep Meep.
Endurance will play a major factor in this home team match up since a number of skaters will be playing both games. The Hobots go into the game with more skaters on the roster, but smart bench management and substitutions may make all the difference. Tired skaters often earn more penalties, and skaters in the penalty box can’t help their team. Pelvis Chestly will manage the bench for the Hobots, while beloved league ginger Seam Slayer will make rare appearance coaching the Brawlers. Saturday’s forecast calls for a sunny 84 degrees, but these athletes regularly skate through the heat of the day on Saturdays, and should manage the heat with little fuss.
No matter who wins this battle of wills, all four teams will head over to Ned’s Bar & Grill (2509 San Mateo NE) after the game for the afterparty. Fans are welcome and encouraged to join in the fun!
