Updates from the Road

Hello, Duke City fans! It’s been an action-packed few months for our travel teams. Check out what we’ve been up to:

Duke’s City’s All-Star Muñecas Muertas started the season strong with a 189 – 95 win against the El Paso TexPistols on February 13th. The season opener featured several new faces for the Muñecas: Hearno Evil, a recent transfer from Crossroads City (Las Cruces); Magali Coetzee, a long-time Duke City skater but first-time Muñeca; and Skela-Laur, a brand-new transfer from High Altitude Roller Derby in Flagstaff, Arizona. The Muñecas also welcomed back Nikki Nail’er (and her adorable new baby!) after her season away. The TexPistols were amazing hosts, and sent a few of the Muñecas home with recognition awards: Killer Queen with Best Blocker, Skela-Laur with Best Jammer, and Meep Meep with Overall MVP.

The very next weekend, a few of our Muñecas teamed up with some Los Alamos Derby Dames to attend Camp Elite in Austin for the second year in a row. There, they learned high-level derby skills and strategy from coaches Smarty Pants, Mercy, Luludemon, and Booty Quake. They also squeezed in time to see a banked-track game before leaving town.

On March 26th, the Muñecas headed down to Las Cruces to play the Junction City Trainwrecks from Ogden, Utah in their first sanctioned game of the season. The Trainwrecks were heavily favored to win, but the Muñecas fought hard and came out on top, 192 – 175, in one of the closest derby match-ups of the weekend! “It’s so exciting to successfully execute plays that we’ve been working on in practice,” said Fighting Girlfriend on the Muñecas’ victory.  Way to go, Muñecas, for all your hard work!

On March 9th, Duke City’s B-Team the Juggernaughties joined the Muñecas for a trip to Salida, Colorado to battle the Ark Valley High Rollers. The Juggernaughties took on Ark Valley’s B-Team in their first game of the season, under their new co-captains Hearno Evil and Magali Coetzee. The Juggernaughties proudly debuted new teammates Mazel Tov Cocktail, Ms. Mayhem, Hermione Strangler, SmacKillavrey, and JK Rolling, and welcomed back Hella Gazella’s familiar face. Our skaters started strong right out of the gate with an incredible 24-point power jam from French BulldozHer. After two periods of fast-paced play and a few lead changes, the score was 174 – 208 in favor of Ark Valley, but our Juggernaughties  fought hard for every point. “We came together as a team and played a strong, focused game,” said Juggernaughties co-captain Magali Coetzee. “We may not have won, but I am incredibly proud of what we accomplished in Salida.” Hermione Strangler and SmacKillavrey were recognized  for their hard work with awards for Best Blocker and Best Jammer respectively. Congratulations to the Juggernaughties on  a fantastic first game.

The Muñecas Muertas faced off against the Ark Valley All-Stars in an action-packed and excruciatingly close sanctioned game. The roster saw a few changes, with veterans Kell's Inferno and Doom Dee Doom unable to to make the trip, while Captain Leigh Featherstone returned for her first game since a six-month injury break. The Muñecas established an early lead and defended it for most of the game, but Ark Valley steadily chipped away at the Muñecas’ advantage. Early in the first half, Muñecas jammer Skela-Laur took a high block to the face that resulted in an Ark Valley skater being ejected from the game; Skela returned to the track in the second half in a blocking role. Jammers Fighting Girlfriends and Meep Meep took over the bulk of the jamming rotation for the rest of the game, with occasional appearances from Swearin' Marie and Hearno Evil each wearing the star. At the conclusion of regulation, the score was tied at 149, initiating the second overtime jam of Duke City’s 2016 Season. The Muñecas held strong until the end, but lost to Ark Valley 160 – 164. Nikki Nail’er took home the award for Most Valuable Blocker while Most Valuable Jammer went to Meep Meep. Big thanks to Ark Valley for hosting us, and for the competitive derby! We hope to see you again.

On the horizon: The Muñecas head to Happy Valley, Utah this weekend for a quick tournament with the Crossroads City Sucias and the Happy Valley Molly Morbids. In June, the Muñecas travel to Georgia on the 18th to participate in the Classic Crush tournament, and the Juggernaughties head up to Los Alamos on the 25th to battle our friends the M’atom Bombs! Don’t forget to look for your favorite Juggernaughties and Muñecas at the Duke City home teams game on May 28th. Good luck to all our Duke City skaters. We are so proud of you, ladies!

To help fund this ambitious schedule, the travel team is running a month-long online fundraiser with a special edition t-shirt. Have you heard the Muñecas cheer? Now you can wear it. You can also catch your favorite Juggernaughties and Muñecas running a Car Wash Fundraiser on Saturday, May 14 at Burgers N More (4100 Central Ave SW, Albuquerque). See you there!
