"Slamaz-owned": Muñecas Beat Pikes Peak in Home Debut
On Saturday, November 11th Duke City Derby hosted their first bout against a visiting league as the Pikes Peak Derby Dames' Slamazons rolled into town to take on our own Muñecas Muertas. The Slamazons faced a daunting task of trying to skate competitively against an emerging team while adapting to DCD's decidedly unconventional venue. In the end the combination of home track advantage and the strong play of the Muñecas proved more than Pikes Peak could overcome.

The first period was the most difficult for the Slamazons as they struggled mightily to figure out how to score points on Duke City's narrow Club Fantasia track. The Muñecas, however, capitalized on the Slamazon blocking and jumped out to a quick 37-2 lead, which they extended to 54-8 by the period's end.

The second period was a different story, with the Slamazons adopting new blocking strategies and beginning to solve the unusual track. Gameplay picked up dramatically in intensity during the second, and this bout turned into one of the most physical matches in Duke City history. By the time the dust had settled at the end of the second, the Slamazons had mostly stopped the bleeding and trailed by a score of 94-35.
The third period was more of the same, with Sugrrr Rush of The Slamazons showing some great speed at Jammer and the Muñecas setting up camp in the penalty stocks. The game ended with a score of Muñecas 118, Slamazons 54.

Duke City Derby is grateful to the Pikes Peak Derby Dames for being the first visiting team to brave the Club Fantasia track, and extends its congratulations for a game well played and hard fought. We'll hopefully be making a trip up to Colorado Springs sometime soon for a rematch on their turf.

In the meantime, the Muñecas have moved to 2-0i n preparation for a much hoped for bid to the Dust Devil Regional tournament in Tucson, AZ in February. Next up for the Munecas is the Tucson Saddletramps in Tucson on December 16th, the toughest team the Munecas will have ever played a full match against. Check back for details soon!
